The Japanese are known for incorporating ancient known forms to cure the body of several ailments and several such spa and massage techniques are finding their way into spa and health clinics in the city. Sagar Pagar of a Matunga & Juhu based spa chain says the Shiatsu, in particular, has been innovated with the power of touch for healing physical, mental and spiritual ailments. ” Touch is a powerful healer to de-stress hormones. It can diminish pain and alleviate depression along with boosting the immune system,” says Sagar who recommends the Shiatsu for most of his clients.”The Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on therapy massage that uses fingers and palms to pressure on the body, ” adds Sagar.Devendra Upadhyay, manager of a Kemps Corner Spa. “It is a dry massage (no oil) and works on special points on the body, to remove blockage and crystal deposits in the body. The Shiatsu aims to flush out toxins and helps one relax, ” says Devendra. He explains that it utilizes pressure and assisted stretching techniques, such as massage, physiotherapy, acupressure, osteopathy, lymphatic drainage, and others. He adds, “The treatment stimulates the circulation and flow of the lymphatic fluid, releases toxins and deep-seated tensions, stimulates the hormonal system and the immune system, and acts on the autonomic nervous system, allowing the recipient to relax deeply and to get in touch with his own healing power.”Sumana Narayan who specializes in spa treatments says that Japanese techniques have an advantage over others because “they assure a holistic approach towards de-stressing and unwinding. The forms go a long way in the removal of knots, help in achieving glowing skin and strengthen bone joint flexibility.” But Sagar Warns that it is advisable only for people below 45 years. “It cannot be given to overweight people or who have suffered from slip disc or other major orthopaedic ailments, ” he ends.
